Gay Seniors Homes Proposed In Vancouver

(Vancouver, British Columbia) Plans have been unveiled for a condominium for Vancouver's LGBT seniors to be built by an American company that already has completed a similar project in New Mexico.

RainbowVision Properties has opened its facility in Santa Fe and is working on LGBT seniors condos in Palm Springs and the San Francisco area.

It is partnering with British Columbia's Plum Living Properties.

The proposal is for 150 suites along with a communal dining room for those who do not, or cannot prepare food in their apartments.  There also would be a fitness centre, a lounge and a cabaret.

The units would be sold at market value the companies said.

"Gays and lesbians, especially in the [baby] boomer age … are interested as they age to be with people who at least have come common interests … and this type of community is something that they're looking for," Plum Living Properties president Dean Malone told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

The project still needs planning board approval.  It would be built in East Vancouver and construction could begin in 2010.

The project is already receiving wide interest and about 30 people already have paid a $1,000 deposit.

The  deposits are held in trust and the company said they are fully refundable at any time, or at the depositor’s option, may be credited against additional commitments or towards the purchase of a specific condominium.

Joan Ford and her partner are among those who made a deposit.

"I don't want to have to face going back into the closet because there's someone looking after me who's homophobic," Ford told the CBC.

A similar project announced by a separate company in Toronto two years ago never got off the ground.
