(Dacona, Colorado) Dacona City Councilmember
Sandra Tucker has resigned but won't apologize for a "joke" she posted
on a community Web site that offended a large number of people including the
town's mayor.
Mayor Wade Carlson last week
asked Tucker to remove the posting from Tri-town.com , a community message board.
Tucker refused, and resigned in protest.
While Tucker dug in her heels,
citing her First Amendment rights to free speech, the moderator of the forum
removed the "joke" at Carlson's request.
Carlson says he did not want Tucker to
resign, only to get rid of the racist, homophobic posting.
The page-long "joke"
was about a white male who has a "nightmare" in which he
wakes up to discover that he has "been turned" black, gay, Jewish and
disabled. The joke uses terms such as "negro," "queer" and
"fairy," and uses stereotypes to describe Jews, Mexicans and people
who are HIV-positive.
The "joke" ends with
the person having the "nightmare" realizing he also is a Democrat,
a "fate worse" than all the rest.
