(New Bedford, Massachusetts) New Bedford police
Friday released the recordings of frantic 911 calls made from a gay bar during
Thursday's bloody attack (story)
by a man armed with a hatched and handgun in which three people were critically
wounded.
The first call from Puzzles was made by the
bartender who left the line open for 911 dispatchers to hear the chaos going on
inside the club.
The second call was from a woman patron.
911: "What's your emergency?"
Caller: "I need an ambulance! I need an
ambulance! ... (unintelligible) ... Puzzles Lounge on North Front Street."
911: "You need an ambulance? What's the
problem?"
Caller: "Someone's been shot!"
911: "Somebody's been shot?"
Caller: "Somebody's been shot! You have to
get here now!"
911: "Who's been shot? How many
people?"
Caller: (unintelligible)
911: "Ma'am, calm down, I've already got
people on the way. How many people?"
Caller: "I think just one."
Police arrived at the club a few moment later.
Inside they found two people shot and one with a deep gash from a hatchet.
Two of the victims remain in hospital - one in critical
condition. The third victim was released Friday.
A patron identified the attacker as 18 year old
Jacob D. Robida. She said she knew him from Bedford High School.
Police have issued a warrant charging Robida with
attempted murder, assault and civil-rights violations. A search of his
parents home turned up a mock coffin and what police described as "Nazi
regalia" and anti-Semitic writings on the wall.
In releasing the tapes Friday Capt.
Richard Spirlet said it is only a matter of time before Robida is arrested.
"We are just saturating the area with his photo and with the car also.
Maybe now, he might have hid and buried himself for the first 24 hours, and now
he coming out, figures that police are kind of slowing up a little bit. It is
impetrative that we keep the pressure on him," Spirlet said.
Robida is believed to be driving a a green 1999
Pontiac Grand Am. Spirlet said that Robida is considered armed and dangerous,
and if spotted should not be approached.
Thursday night about 150 people attended a vigil
at the bar. (story)
