Florida Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment Loses Steam
by The Associated Press

Posted: January 6, 2006 - 7:00 pm ET

(Tallahassee, Florida) Supporters of a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriages in Florida say they're got a long ways to go in collecting petitions.

Members of the group called "Florida-4-Marriage-dot-org" say they have about a quarter of the needed signatures and have just weeks to collect the rest.

Organizers say they've collected about 150,000 of the approximately 600,000 signatures needed for a vote on the amendment in November.

Supporters are gearing up for a final push to collect the remaining signatures in less than three weeks.

The petitions must be submitted to supervisors of elections by February 1, so the group is setting its own deadline for January 23.

Florida already has a so-called defense of marriage law that bans same-sex marriage.

In California two conservative groups e trying to get constitutional amendments on the ballot are also having problems.

One group has postponed its initiative, while the other said it may not have enough signatures for the November election. (story)
